there's still some hope, your local animal shelter probably makes them available for a week, there maybe a no-kill shelter in town.

they get a lot of guests because of divorce, not to mention foreclosures, they can keep them a lot longer now that spay requirements and higher license fees for breedable pets encourage fixing and the shelters are not nearly as crowded as they used to be.
