Regarding MSFT vs. Yahoo, I think that one thing that's been lost track of in the past decade is that Yahoo was never a search engine.

It was a searchable, categorized index. It's a subtle but distinct difference from Google, and attempts to use it to compete with Google (right down to strapping a spider on its back and making it pretend to be a search engine) are fundamentally flawed, IMO.

I think Microsoft might feel this way, too, so I suspect that their twin motives in the whole situation are: A) shut yahoo down, period, and B) acquire Flickr.

Before the first offer was rejected, I think "A" would have been phrased differently, but after the rejection ... yeah. It's not looking good for Yahoo.
