So they wanted to speak with the source to continue pulling the string.

As far as whether they would have emerged without unnamed sources...I don't know. There's not much appetite for investigative journalism in the industry nowadays. Look how long it took for the Mulroney stuff to make it back to the forefront.

That said, lazy journos abused the willingness to let gutless hacks go "on the record" without doing so and that hasn't improved any coverage either.
