over exposed, digital sensors can't deal with overload, white is white and there's nothing to pull out, unlike a film capture

I suspect the camera was set on auto exposure to capture the ambient light of the dark sky and town, when the lightning hit, bright as the sun, just over whelmed the overal exposure.
