Also (I'm not a comic book reader, but...) I understand Captain Aemrica's shield is made from some unique element.
When Tony's synthesising the element to power his Arc reactor, he sees at the shield and says "That's what I'm looking for!". Then he uses it to prop up the particle accelerator (or whatever it is) so it's level. My guess is that whatever is in Captain America's shield is (irony!) the same element he synthesised.
