What I understood from the light, is that it's a prison for an evil spirit, and if you go in, this evil entity can take control of you.
When the mother said that if that light goes out, all light goes out, I don't think she meant that the light controls everyone's soul. More like if that light goes out, then the evil spirit is set lose, and the result will be that all light or lives on the planet will end.
Now the evil spirit is lose, but it's still stuck on the island.
