ST lesion of the night: Suicide Attempts:
|
Many suicide attempts involve cutting the anterior side of the distal forearm in an attempt to
cause lethal hemorrhaging by lacerating the radial and/or ulnar arteries. Many attempts fai
because the targeted arteries are not the most superficial structures at the wrist. Rather
the individual often cuts, in addition to the skin, the palmaris longus tendon, the median
nerve, and the flexor carpi radialis tendon. While the tendons can be repaired, cutting the
median nerve has serious consequences since this nerve supplies intrinsic muscles of the
thumb. Loss of these muscles renders the hand incapable of most fine motor movements
that involve opposition of the thumb to other digits.
What this means pixie is cut vertically and not horizontally.
The gun in mouth method doesn't work either because people usually point the gun straight up (while still in the mouth) so they damage the frontal lobe which just alters their personality. The conscious center is in the brainstem.
