In my experience, beer fests can go two ways. There are legit ones, run by Beer Advocate or similar orgs, that really focus on interesting stuff.

Then there are others that are a cash grab. And if a beerfest has invited Heineken, Molson, Dos Equis, Red Stripe, etc., it screams out that it is the latter. There will be interesting beers to try, but you'll have to search them out. A lot of the fest will be small pours of widely available beers, that require no "tasting", because everyone has had dozens of them. Which might make it easier for you, because there will be less stuff that makes you go "ooooh, I've got to try that!"
