I think it's her character that brought the attention. after she had some high-profile eps is when she started being out there more. that's the thing.

I think I remember seeing Lea Michele more as the show was rolling-out, and she seems to get out there the most of any of the kids.
anyway, I'm not saying Jane was unknown before the show at all, just that the new level of recognition is because of it.
