Not true. The pitcher was able to mess with the ball, the spit ball was still a legal pitch for instance.

The pitcher in Ruth's era had many more advantages over the batter than the modern pitcher does. See my post above, the mound was higher, the ball wasn't as lively and least of all some of those stadiums they played in were huge.
