ST Lesson of the Day: "The Million Dollar Nerve"

With your hand and fingers relaxed (fingers slightly flexed and palm slightly cupped), flex your
middle or ring finger until it touches the palm. The recurrent branch of the median nerve is directly
under the skin at this point, which means a hand laceration in this area is at risk of cutting this
important nerve. It is called the "million dollar nerve" because of law suits against doctors who
sewed up the skin without checking to see if the nerve was also severed. The cut ends of a severed
nerve can be sutured together, providing a pathway for regenerating axons to reach the muscle of
the thenar compartment.
