A day late, but my Lost reactions and questions (spoils)

It left me a bit annoyed to be frank, all the three main characters behaved like idiots, just because it was convenient for the writers. The brother's death, for example, after Jacob takes him to the cave (why?). Incidentally gor some reason the "source" made me think of the suitcase in Pulp Fiction.
Anyway, does the ending mean that the black smoke isn't really his brother? It just take his form after the source got somehow corrupted?
As the mother said, answers that only lead to more questions...
