I love the irrational and totally unsupported fear that lost farming means more houses.

Yes, farm land has become tracts of housing. But not every farm that goes fallow becomes housing.
For one, housing needs to be near something, anything, and many farms are out in the middle of nowhere and in no danger of becoming housing developments if they go fallow.
