In response to "lying implies intent to deceive" by pixman

Deceive. Inveigle. Obfuscate.

This controversy falls heavily into the Obfuscate category; if anything nefarious was going on, that was the extent of it: obfuscation. Not deception or inveiglement.

If they were intentionally doing anything at all, they were simply surfing some vague phrasing with the hope of creating a subtle suggestion that he fully understood and had experienced some of the same stuff as the actual veterans.
