B&N didn't force it, publishers did. Competition from B&N would have forced prices down.

Several publishers threatened to pull ALL their books (e and hard copy) unless Amazon raised prices.

As for what Ty is seeing, some of that may be a reflection of Amazon's listing of third-party sellers who have used copies at really low prices.
