If you're planning on sightseeing, getting a hotel near midtown is best

that way you're in the middle of it all and never really have to travel much, going to and from a hotel that's far from everything is sometimes a hassle, especially if you have to rely on the subways on the weekend where there are delays everywhere. You can always look for a hotel around union square 14th street all the way to 57th street, you don't have to necessarily focus on just Broadway and Times Square. As for the weather, NYC has its hot summer days but it's usually evened out by a cool rain or so a few days later.
