As far as this ending is concerned, they could all just as easily been a bunch of people that met on a cruise ship, or took a trip to Belgium.
The fact that they went to the island, anything they did on the island, anything they did to get off they island, whether they were candidates or not, in the end meant nothing.
The finale essentially explained this season and just pushed every single question about the origin of the island, how it moves, the egyptian stuff, what the light is, why there is a protector in the first place, who cares if it sinks, etc, under the rug.
