friend this morning:
So, sideways world was basically a purgatory where they were all waiting for one another before entering the gates of Heaven but they didn't know this was their purgatory until Desmond started to help them understand that they weren't living actual lives, right? Ben was not ready to proceed with them.
So the island reality was a real one. Kate, Sawyer, Claire, Miles & Lapidus lived to go back to the real world and died at some unknown time in the future. Jack died on the island (I thought that was a nice and appropriate closing as well as the quiet scenes of the wreckage). Hurley became the new protector with Ben of all people and they too died at some future point.
One thing I feel we were shortchanged on was Desmond rediscovering with Penny. She just appeared at the church when Jack walked in from the backdoor.
There was a point where I was wondering if Desmond or Jack would become 'white smoke' monster after going into the cave. But here is why I think that did not happen:
It is known (particularly by Charles Widmore) that Desmond had abilities that could let him withstand what happens to others in the cave (soul splitting, body destroying etc) so he was the key to 'uncorking' the island which, unbeknownst to MIB/Smokey, was also the key to his invulnerability/immortality. The uncorking could allow MIB to leave the island but also made him mortal.
So, if the island was uncorked when Jacob was still alive then that would allow them to try to kill each other much like MIB could kill Jack or Jack kill MIB as we saw in their final battle (MIB ultimately killed by Kate). But uncorking also meant island destruction so it was up to Jack to save the island (and the world itself?) by 'corking it'' again much like the wine bottle. Jack could do this because he drank from the cup.
But I don't think Jack knew he could do this ahead of time because it seemed to me he was surprised he was still alive and that it worked. His effort was a leap of faith - pure sacrifice on his part. And then his wound ultimately sealed his fate.
That is how I see it this morning.
I do believe that the major component of the cave was based in electromagnetism which doesn't diminish its mystical/soul containing properties - it was just the Earth based physical power that kept things in check.
Now that I think about it, Desmond was probably the only person that could have turned the failsafe key below the hatch, after Locke destroyed the computer allowing for the numbers to be typed in, without dying.

Aliens, huh? Now you're really going to blow up some worldviews! :)
