the flash-sideways is sorta like a matrix. they created a "world" in purgatory where nothing on the island happened so that they could get right and let go of everything.

just because it was supposed to have been 6 yrs prior doesnt mean it wasnt 150yrs into the future. it wasnt real, and therefore time would have no meaning.
