I didn't see last night so I'm speaking more of the theory here.

Newhart did it right; but if he wakes up next to some random chick instead of Suzanne Pleshette, it's a horrible ending. St Elsewhere's ending is a bad ending. The Matrix is a shitty ending.

Copout endings can easily destroy the value of the entire series imo.
