Lost spoiler questions from someone who watched the first 4 episodes and the last 90 minutes. (spoilers)

From what I could gather, whatever happened on the island was the "real" timeline as we would normally experience it. The parallel universe or whatever you want to call it was some sort of out of time and place afterlife. People are only able to accept their "death" when they discover true love in this afterlife. What's important in life is the connections you make with other people and so it's natural that you would reconnect in the afterlife. The people on the island met back up in that church because they had impact on each other in life.
Why were these particular people brought together? Was that ever explained or was it just chance? I know from early in the show that in the flashbacks there were interconnections between the characters that even they weren't always aware of.
There was no one not from the island at the church except for Matthew Fox's dad. I assume there would be other people in their lives that meant something to these people. Would there be a series of reunions taking place in this afterlife?
