the plane crash happened, and this was all just the blink of Jack's 'redemption.'
There were their 'real' (bad) lives, where they were all LOST and leading horrible lives, making bad choices.
Then there was their 'alternate' (good) lives, there they had made the 'correct' choices.
The island was the connection between the two. Everyone died, but they were all together trying to tie the two lives together and make it right.
Something like that.
