It was revealed that the people on the plane were chosen by the "protector" of the island because they were "lost" and unhappy and lonely in their lives. Bringing them to the island gave their lives purpose where they felt that they had none anymore.
Matthew Fox's dad explained that their time on the island, with those people, was the most important in their lives. The people you saw together had romantic relationships on the island.
