The plane crash was just the catalyst - it was just an accident and it crashed over the island. One of the passengers was Dr. Jack Sheppard. Before "ascending" to the next level (whatever your religion may be), Jack was given the chance to 'redeem' himself with one final test: the island. His final 'test' - to us over the course of years but in actuality is only a few minutes at the end of Jack's life - contains many people who have influenced the choices in Jack's life whether he knew it or not. By the end, Jack makes the right choices, and ascends.
However, we're also given insights into the lives and choices of the people that were connected, even briefly - to Jack.
In the end, we're shown that the people in our lives are important, and we should cherish every one of our fellow man. It's not *just* about our own choices - it's how we influence those around us and help to make mankind better.
