Is the smoke monster a manifestation of the chaotic energy on the island? Is it evil? Is it that the "good guy" (the island's protector) is able to somehow keep it in check?

Are the numbers just coincidences? Did Hurely win the lottery because of the island's or its protector's intervention/influence?
