religion. There's another level of existence - be it in our mind or "elsewhere" (i.e. purgatory) - that we witness when we die or are about to.
I think it's the same thing people who have near death experiences report seeing things that they 'went somewhere.' This was Jack's 'somewhere'.
So I can't really answer if it was all his dream or was actually purgatory - it's left up the viewer to decide.
