So something big about Lost last night bugged me, but not enough to ruin it all. (spoilers)

What was the point of the whole Los Angeles thing? What's Desmond trying to do, anyway? He didn't gather everybody, just some of the most prominent people. And to what purpose? Is it some kind of metaphysical afterlife "let's all go to heaven together" thing? Then why are some of the survivors (Kate, Sawyer, Hurley) in the room, too? And why does it all hinge on Jack's father? It seems that half of the last season was wasted on a subplot that proved entirely fruitless.
