One other LOST question back to the beginning of the season (spoils)

IF the sideways story is, in fact, the lives these people perceived they were living but really they were in purgatory waiting for the group to come together to ascend into heaven, then explain why in the beginning of the season the sideway story appears to have as it's catalyst the shot of the island underwater?

Is it possible that whatever happened after Jack died and Hurley/Ben took over that the island really does end up underwater finally allowing Hurley to join the group?
