a lot of things that aren't true.
"They aren't dead" Well, yeah they are. Unless they're parsing that to mean the soul doesn't die.
I don't listen to or even believe anything the producers say because they've misdirected us too many times.
I'll take what was put on the screen.
I do think that they expected and probably wanted things to be a bit ambiguous. That having multiple theories as to what really happened is what they intended.
I think you can read it so that everything that happened through the denoting of the bomb was real and the bomb killed everyone on the Island and sent those who weren't ready to let go in to purgatory/limbo where they experienced the sideways reality. A place where they could get a "re-do" and make different or better decisions based on what they learned on the Island.
But I think it's also perfectly valid to say that the plane crashed, killing everyone aboard and the souls of those people and the souls of the Dharma folks and the Others and Rousseau, etc all collectively created the experiences on the Island, the time shifts, the sideways reality, etc (except the flashbacks which are real occurrences)to help each other learn and come to terms with their faults, their death, etc.
