True, he did. But he also had met her before, and had a relationship with her in real life. Granted, it had turned sour, but he still already knew her.
Jack's son was only in purgatory. There wasn't a possbility of being with him after, AFAIK. Locke could eventually be with Helen in heaven once she gets there.
