the light is the accumulation of all the good in people's souls.

Put it out and evil takes over (Smokey).

Jacob/Jack/Hurley were there to protect the light from ever going out.

Meanwhile, the evil was doing everything it could (within the "rules") to put the light out and escape its prison.
