Lost Spoils questions

So when Allison Janney made Jacob the protector she said a blessing over some water (or wine) and he drank it. He then became immortal (subject to being killed by someone other than smokey). When Jacob makes Jack the protector he says some blessing over the water and then fills the cup and when Jack drinks it he says "now you're just like me". When Jack makes Hurley the protector, he gives him a drink from a water bottle with no blessing. I take from that that immortality was not passed on. Not sure it was when Jacob made Jack the protector. When he said "you're just like me" he was already dead and thus no longer immortal. Thoughts on these?
