he wanted to be the Leader of the Others to simply be close to Jacob. Don't forget...he was bugged out that others saw Jacob and he couldn't.
I don't think he wanted to replace Jacob. He wanted to be loved by Jacob so when Hurley took over and asked him to be his Advisor his life long dream was fulfilled.
