They explained it to my satisfaction, fwiw, as a pool of the essence of human souls, which apparently manifests as a well of pure electromagnetic energy. All the rest of the things you mention can be readily extrapolated or imagined without having to be explicitly defined, at least to the extent necessary to accept them as viable plot devices. But, perhaps that's all a function of my not having seen the first five seasons.
