it's pretty clear that there was a lot of stuff the Lost producers threw in there because it seemed cool at the time

"Fuck it, we'll explain it later"
One of the two producers also said that a lot of the books they used on the show were just things people working on it were reading that they dropped in without having a clear plan as to what they meant. Explanations work if there's a grand coherent plan to fit it into. I question whether that's even possible for a 120 episode TV series.
