Yet another reason I prefer my particular read on the ending. Everything *is* answered. (spoils)

All that stuff that seems od, doesn't go anywhere, etc...

The "it was a collective soul-dream" explains it all.

Why was there a polar bear? Because there was a comic on the plane that had a polar bear in it.

Why did Eko's brother's plane crash there? It didn't. It just served to help Eko "move on" and get right with himself.

Why did the plane have a shitload of heroin in it? Because Charlie needed a shitload of temptation to overcome.

Everything that happened on the Island served getting the characters to where they needed to be. All those whisper voices? People in limbo not ready to even trust enough to join in a group, let alone let go to move on.

Why was Richard still on the Island after 150 years? Guilt over the murder and mourning for his wife.

The Island served the needs of the people lost there. People don't always think linearly and odd things can impinge on dreams, therefore the things on the Island didn't always act linearly or make logical sense.
