that's how I learned to identify freeways. *shrug*

84 and 87 are huge higways near here and they're called that. Though 87 is usually called the Thruway.

p.s. up here, and in some other places I've been in the country, there is use of "the" with non-number names of highways... like "the nimitz"

My understanding is that the "the (route number)" terminology has taken hold in So Cal in the last 20-30 years.
