I downloaded the LOST torrent, and apparently the extra time was not always commercials.

The 2 1/2 hour episode without commercials was 1:44 long. The previous 1 hour episode was 41:29. So there were 21 minutes of additional content.

Of course, they didn't need to re-hash the first hour so that saved a couple of minutes for more commercials.
