My understanding is that the "the (route number)" terminology has taken hold in So Cal in the last 20-30 years.

My family in the region use different terms depending on the generation. Those from my parents generation and older use the names like "Golden State Freeway" and "Harbor Freeway", whereas those of my generation use "the five" or "the One-ten".
