sure, it's a different circumstance, but it's still recycling an old idea that the audience assumed had been rejected.
if you recall, the fan consensus back then was "it'd better not turn out to be purgatory!" the only reason the producers responded at all was to assuage their fears that it wasn't an easy-out solution like purgatory.
