You're a religious dude. Is the how and why God got his power something that bothers you? I would think probably not.
The Bible and other religious teachings tell you what God is and what He stands for and what He's done. But there is no origin of God story (as far as I know). All of that is the faith part.
I look at the island the same way. The island holds the light and someone has to protect it. The how and why the island holds the light is immaterial. The fact is...it's there and through faith, people will come to accept that and (in the case of Jacob, Jack, Hurley and others) come to protect it.
Does that make any sense?
