Other than the cool factor of the ipad, netbooks strike me as the much better option.

Other than the touchscreen, there's nothing you can't do on a netbook that you can do on an ipad, plus a real keyboard to do real work. The keyboard is small though so it's still a little tougher to use for serious work than a laptop, but it's very viable.
