Help me make sure I understand this.

VMWare Server (the free product, formerly GSX Server) is an application that runs under an operating systems (like Windows) and then offers virtualized OSes under it.

Is VMWare ESX Server an actually OS by itself that hosts virtualized OSes under it, or does ESX Server also sit under another OS?
