all season long Lt Van Buren has been fighting cancer, and Ernie Hudson has been guest starring as her supportive boyfriend
Detective Lupo overheard her talking on the phone about getting a loan to pay for her huge medical bills. So he arranged a secret fund raising party among the cops and prosecutors at a bar to help get some money for her. She found out about it and told Lupo that he didn't have time for that and to cancel the party. Ernie Hudson told Van Buren that she'd have better luck getting a loan if there were two incomes that she could declare to the bank.
She has been getting chemotherapy all season. She had an MRI early in the show. The doctor called her back and told her that the MRI showed nothing as the data must have gotten corrupted and she needed to come back in for another MRI. She showed up all cranky for the second MRI.
They stopped the planned Columbine like massacre that was the case last night. The final scene was the fund raising party at the bar that Lupo planned, cops and the DAs were there. Van Buren showed up with Ernie Hudson and introduced him as her fiance. The police brass came in with personal checks from themselves and people in the mayor's office to help with the fund raising.
Van Buren's cell phone goes off. She goes over to a quiet corner and returns the call, it was from her doctor. She listens quietly on the phone. She hangs up and tears come to her eyes. She lifts her eyes skyward and says "thank you, thank you, thank you".
