The heart of the island is a cave that mystically balances life and death, good and evil. The heart is associated with strong electromagnetic anomalies. The MIB/Smoke Monster was created by interacting with this cave. There is a protector who has mystical power to protect the island and ensure that the light doesn't go out. The electromagnetic anomalies and smokey pretty much account for most of the weirdness.
That's the explanation. You may not like the explanation but it was explained.
