Jacob said that the light (the goodness within all people) acted as a cork to hold in the ultimate evil.
As it turns out, it was literally a cork.
That evil became a tangible thing as soon as Jacob threw his brother into the light. At that moment, his brother ceased to exist and Smokey was "born."
The island and it's protector (Jacob's mother, Jacob, Jack and Hurley) kept that evil from escaping and destroying the world.
That's it. That's all there is. What exactly do you want?
Do you want them to go back to the very moment the island came into existence to explain exactly how it came to be? You may as well ask for God's backstory.
There was no scientific answer. There never was.
