A lot of thing doesn't make sense. If I remember correctly (spoils)

The mother explains that either Jacob or the pre-smokey would be in charge of protecting the light after her. She says the guardian of the light would have to protect it from MEN, who are corrupt, not the evil-wannabe-smokey.
The mother clearly says the pre-smokey was the chosen one and not Jacob.
Just after Jacob throws him into the light that his "evil" is showned. We can debate here for days who is exactly evil. The submisse Jacob, who "kidnaps" people from the world to serve his purpose, or the curious Smokey, who just wants to know the world.
It's too easy to blame Smokey because he was prived from his liberty. Jacob was indeed the tiran and the villain of the story.
