I refuse to accept that Dharma was brought to the island as candidates.

Let's remember that Dharma didn't call them "the Others", they called them "the Hostiles". That's not how candidates behave towards each other. Ben, alone, didn't wipe out Dharma. He did it as part of a scheme orchestrated by the Others. it wasn't Ben's idea. He just helped out and made it possible.
For the record, I believe Dharma is led by Whidmore. He left the island and came back to the island to try to harness whatever power it holds, putting him at odds with his previous island-mates, the Others.
But this takes us to a greater problem. If the Others were Jacob's chosen people, let's remember that the Others spent their time patrolling the island and KILLING people. These were Jacob's people. Killers. While Dharma (Whidmore's people?) were a peaceful commune. The actions of the Others damns Jacob, Richard, Ben, and everyone else associated with that group.
