I think the wasting key/crucial years concern is somewhat overstated. Not sure what options you're considering, but time spent elsewhere is not

usually viewed as a major disadvantage when we're hiring. If it's in a different area than we're looking for it might cause some loss of that time (i.e. not given full credit for that time in practice), but it often leads to other connections and opportunities that can be exploited that someone going straight through the system don't get. So it may be a short term drag, but a long term upside in either option. If you want to bounce some specifics off me I'm happy to listen and offer whatever advice I can.
