the rig exploded and sank in pretty short order. it's not like they had heaps of time sitting around, wondering "hey, did anyone hit the shutoff?"

the crews on all those rigs are very well versed in emergency procedures, because if something goes catastrophically wrong, they're in shitloads of trouble.
